The web cam mounted on the roof of the tower was used by NOAA for studying the ice on Lake Superior in the winter of 2002 - 2003. When it malfunctioned in February 2003 the Coast Guard was contacted to fly a repair mission. Topographic maps and previous aerial photographs allowed the Coast Guard crew to find a spot to land on the island before the trip was attempted. Weather foiled the first 2 opportunities but on February 25, 2003 a successful flight and landing on the island was made. Click 'Next Slide' to see a sequence of photos of the Coast Guard helicopter on the island.
